ADHD Tip - How An Evaluation And Diagnosis Are Not Necessarily The Right Path To Understanding ADHD
ADHD treatment is not cut and dry.
Imagine the following scenario:
You have waited almost 2 - 3 months to meet with a psychiatrist or physician to discuss your child's behavioral "problems."
Everyone around you insists your child must have ADHD.
The Doctor asks you a few key questions, and you respond the best you know how.
All it takes is a few key buzz words and some frustration on your part... and out comes the following:
"Your child has ADHD, give him this pill twice a day and then this pill right before school."
Or at least it can feel this way...
As a parent, your head is probably spinning from the 10 minutes you spent with the Dr., the 45 minutes you waited, and the thousands of questions you can't even get out of your head fast enough.
"Now what," you ask yourself?
Too many people think that an ADHD diagnosis is the a-ha moment parents are looking for.
It's as if all your problems have suddenly been solved just by being able to put your finger on the problem.
With the snap of a finger, you can suddenly:
Begin to sleep soundly
Not worry about your child at school
Have a peaceful family gathering
Have a clean house
Relax for yourself
Who am I kidding, right?
A diagnosis, followed by medication is simply a label with the hope that a pill will be the magic trick to make everything work smoothly again - no matter how long it has been.
ADHD is very real, as are the behavioral problems that are typically associated with a child diagnosed and / or labeled "ADHD."
As a parent, you don't have to settle for a simple label and quick fix prescription pill that is supposed to make life calming and serene.
An evaluation and medication are just the first steps.
These things take time to schedule and to work.
What you need is a plan... a strategy to better understand what is happening and how it affects your child and your family.
Like I tell everyone, there are a few key questions to consider:
What has changed in your child's life?
What has changed in your life?
What has changed in your family?
What major events are taking place in the world around your child?
What else might it be?
I am in now way suggesting that your child does not have ADHD.
Instead, I want you to be as informed as possible.
I want you to understand that sometimes, a label can cause more harm than it can help, when we allow it to happen.
You know better than I, children are very bright and we tend to overestimate our ability to hide things and shield things from our children's awareness.
Consider for a moment what else might be going on in life before you allow someone to rush to a diagnosis and label of ADHD.
